Environmental Review of Subdivision Applications

  • 14 hour course, no prerequisites
Fos­ters an under­stand­ing of the mean­ing of envi­ron­ment, and the crit­i­cal impor­tance of the envi­ron­ment to human­i­ty. At the provin­cial scale stu­dents learn, about the envi­ron­men­tal pro­vi­sions of Alber­ta’s Munic­i­pal Gov­ern­ment Act and its Sub­di­vi­sion and Devel­op­ment Reg­u­la­tions. These pro­vi­sions form the basis of the envi­ron­men­tal review of sub­di­vi­sion and devel­op­ment by plan­ners and devel­op­ment offi­cers. Stu­dents also learn about var­i­ous per­ti­nent envi­ron­men­tal infor­ma­tion resources includ­ing the Envi­ron­men­tal Ref­er­ence Man­u­al for the Review of Sub­di­vi­sions in Alber­ta, and the DRAFT Envi­ron­men­tal Guide­lines for the Review of Sub­di­vi­sions in Alber­ta. Many help­ful web­sites and provin­cial gov­ern­ment envi­ron­men­tal con­tacts are pro­vid­ed. Expert guest instruc­tors give pre­sen­ta­tions on a vari­ety of spe­cif­ic envi­ron­men­tal top­ics, includ­ing devel­op­ment adja­cent to steep val­ley slopes, riv­er flood­ing and ero­sion, site con­t­a­m­i­na­tion, ground­wa­ter, and iden­ti­fi­ca­tion and pro­tec­tion of aggre­gate resources. Each pre­sen­ta­tion involves both an overview of the envi­ron­men­tal top­ic and case studies.
