Horizontal Directional Drilling
- 21 hour course, no prerequisites
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a construction process that is used in the pipeline construction industry to install pipelines under water bodies, steep or unstable slopes and other environmentally sensitive areas. Despite the prolific use of HDD in the Alberta oil and gas transmission sector, planning and executing an HDD project remains a new exercise for many, and often represents a steep and fast paced learning curve for the owner or consulting engineer. After completing this course, students will have an in-depth and technical understanding of HDD through comprehensive coverage of the construction, design, risk management and contracting processes. Design engineers, construction management engineers, owners and engineering consultants will find this course most relevant.
Course at a glance
- Three-day course with case study analysis, lecture, and group interaction; required course within the Trenchless Technologies series.
- Offered in collaboration with the Consortium for Engineered Trenchless Technologies (CETT) and the Faculty of Engineering, University of Alberta.
- Aimed at construction professionals and engineers, as well as managers, project managers, supervisors, and business owners in related areas.
- This course may be eligible to count as CPD hours for membership maintenance with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
What you will learn
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify key concepts within horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects.
- Identify aspects of drill fluid, bore pressure, and annular pressure management systems.
- Demonstrate knowledge of site selection, preparation, and management.
- Understand risk management techniques related to HDD projects.
- Identify geological considerations within Alberta and beyond.
- Understand nuances within pipe selection, including stress analysis.
- Demonstrate knowledge of current HDD design tools.
- Identify surface tool requirements.
- Understand economic implications of HDD design, construction, implementation, and maintenance projects, including those associated with risk management.
