Environmental Audits

Environmental auditing is a management tool increasingly used by organizations to verify that the organization is meeting its environmental obligations. It is also an essential element of an environmental management system and a primary driver of continual improvement. This course will provide the student with the skills and knowledge to undertake effective environmental audits that will provide many benefits to their organization.
Course at a glance
- Lecture-based course with group work and case study review.
- In-class, face-to-face delivery with instructional support through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.
- Aimed at individuals transitioning into the environmental field, as well as mid-level professionals in sectors involving environmental aspects, this course will also be of value to agrologists, biologists, engineers, industrial managers, foresters, technologists, and others who wish to update their skills and knowledge in this area.
- This course may be recognized as educational or continuing professional development credits by ECO Canada, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA), the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB), the College of Alberta Professional Foresters (CAPF), and the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals Of Alberta (ASET).
What you will learn

- Understand how environmental auditing is used to the benefit of an organization.
- Implement the audit process using effective methods and techniques.
- Communicate audit results to stimulate action.
- Apply the skills needed to execute an environmental audit.
- Understand how an audit program is managed within an organization.

- Environmental audits will be created in class as directed by current industry best practices and regulations. Risk assessment and evaluation will also be integrated into audit reports for comprehensive application of course content.
