Behaviour-Based Safety

This sem­i­nar will help a health and safe­ty prac­ti­tion­er devel­op an under­stand­ing of Behav­ior Based Safe­ty pro­grams and the skills to assess the poten­tial for implementation.

Course at a glance
  • In-class, face-to-face delivery with web-enhanced instructional support available through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.
  • Understand why workers behave the way they do and the factors that impact their decisions in the workplace; learn the effects of management systems on behaviours and the role of supervisors in establishing a culture where safe behaviour is the norm; explore ways of integrating behavioural approaches into safety management systems, as you are guided through the use of supporting tools and processes to address the behaviours in the workplace.
  • Aimed at entry-level and practicing health and safety coordinators, professionals, officers, technicians, supervisors, trainers, management, and administrators.
What you will learn

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the safety filter model—How incidents happen.
  • Describe proactive vs. reactive safety cultures.
  • Conduct an assessment on your company’s safety culture.
  • Determine where BBS fits in a safety management system.
  • Assess worker competence levels.
  • Describe personnel performance issues.
  • Understand the growth of effective safety systems.
  • Review the basic principles and practices of BBS management.
  • Describe the components of a behaviour-based safety program.
  • Analyze a critical behaviour to determine antecedents and consequences.
  • List the issues that would be included in a plan for implementing BBS in your current culture and situation.
  • Identify the benefits and challenges of implementing a BBS program in a workplace.
  • Describe methods of measuring, tracking, and reporting a BBS program.
  • Assess the different types of BBS programs available.
  • Select the appropriate BBS program for your company’s safety culture.
  • Develop an implementation strategy for management buy-in of a BBS safety program.
