Human Rights: Workplace Health and Safety

Human Rights Leg­is­la­tion and Safe­ty Leg­is­la­tion do not always work har­mo­nious­ly togeth­er. When con­flict occurs, one must be care­ful to achieve the safe­ty objec­tive with a min­i­mal impact to fun­da­men­tal human rights. This sem­i­nar will dis­cuss the major areas of con­flict includ­ing: pre-employ­ment med­ical test­ing and med­ical infor­ma­tion, duty to accom­mo­date dis­abil­i­ties, pro­vi­sion of pro­grams in dif­fer­ent lan­guages, drug and alco­hol test­ing, and PPE and reli­gious prac­tices. Also, this sem­i­nar will acquaint you with the Human Rights Process and dis­cuss strate­gies to ensure that you and your com­pa­ny are com­ply­ing with the legislation.

What you will learn

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify and analyze human rights laws relevant to health and safety programs at the worksite.
  • Discuss the Human Rights Law in Alberta and communicate an understanding of the application of human rights to health and safety.
  • Acquire the skills necessary to develop safety programs that adhere to the requirements of the Human Rights Law.
  • Present to management and staff, in a professional manner, information and plans related to human rights and their impact on safety programs.
  • Understand how to communicate and interact effectively with the regulators, including Occupational Health and Safety and the Alberta Human Rights Commission.

  • Pre- and post-course activities may be required as part of this course. Pre-course instructions and materials will be available on eClass one week prior to the course start date; advanced registration is advised.
  • Students are required to bring to class a printed copy of Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation, and Code in its entirety. Digital copies of the Act can be acquired free of charge at the Alberta Queen’s Printer website (www.qp.alberta.ca).
  • Course materials are available in eClass, including readings supplied as PDFs or web links.
