The C.I.M. is a professional designation very well regarded in the business community,
with designation holders in every province across Canada.
This designation is awarded by Canada’s senior management association, the Canadian Institute of Management (CIM), an organization that for 75 years has been advancing careers and contributing to the field of management knowledge, enhancing managerial skills, and promoting excellence within the profession.
To fulfill the academic component needed to become Certified in Management, candidates are required to complete the Chartered Management Program (CMP), a series of eight courses that provide the knowledge foundation to earn the designation. The Faculty of Extension offers all courses of the CMP on a part-time basis, allowing you to complete the program while developing your management skills in the workplace.

How to obtain the C.I.M. designation
Students seeking strictly a C.I.M. designation are not required to apply for admission to the University of Alberta — only to register for each course on an individual basis.
If you’re interested in earning a UAlberta credential while you work toward your C.I.M. designation, you may enrol in the Management Development Certificate program as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.
We are open to students with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Our expectation is that you have a commitment to learn and achieve your continuing education goals.
Since all of the CMP courses are also a part of Extension’s Management Development Certificate program, students who complete the CMP courses are able to obtain a credential from the University of Alberta at the same time as they work toward their professional designation. In addition, students holding an undergraduate degree may use the completion of CMP courses toward a Chartered Manager (C. Mgr.) designation.
The CMP program is comprised of eight courses that must be completed so you can apply for the C.I.M. designation. As a university affiliated with the Canadian Institute of Management, UAlberta offers all courses needed to fulfill the C.I.M. designation’s educational requirements. The C.I.M. designation also carries an experience requirement.
CIM membership as a general member is recommended before beginning the program. If you apply for CIM membership prior to starting the program, you will have all transfer credit fees waived when applying for your C.I.M. designation.
CMP course titles are not exact matches for university course titles. The chart below lists course titles as they appear on the Canadian Institute of Management website (left-hand column), followed by the corresponding UAlberta course titles as they relate to CMP requirements (right-hand column).
Once you are admitted, you can verify your program requirements by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view your Academic Advisement.
