The construction industry is one of the largest economic driving forces in Alberta and Canada. The University of Alberta’s Construction Management & Administration Certificate explores the planning, technical, financial, and legal aspects of the construction business to allow learners to develop and expand their managerial skills and advance their careers. This program will be of value to practising construction professionals and those wishing to transition into the field.

Courses in this program are accredited for the Gold Seal certification (Canadian Construction Association) and for the Blue Seal certificate (Alberta Advanced Education — Apprenticeship and Industry Training).

You can register for a course without applying and enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate as long as it is still part of the program plan at the time of your application. Please note, program requirements are subject to change over time.
Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to earn the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.
To enrol, you must have a minimum of a high school diploma (or equivalent) and two years of related work experience. If you attended high school in Alberta, transcripts may be ordered from Alberta Education at 780−427−5732; for high schools outside of Alberta, contact the corresponding provincial department of education.
You are still invited to apply if you do not meet the admission requirements. Your qualifications will be reviewed, and conditional entrance may be granted. For details, contact the program office at 780−492−3034.
Credit transfer agreement
If you have completed a course from Edmonton Construction Association (ECA) or BuildForce Canada within the last five years that is applicable to the Construction Management & Administration program, you may qualify for up to a maximum of 21 hours toward the 39 hours of Elective Credit requirement within our Construction Management & Administration (CST) Certificate program.
Please note that this credit can only be obtained once. In other words, even if you have completed multiple courses, 21 hours is the maximum number of hours allowed for industry training recognition.

Blue Seal – Achievement in Business Competencies Program
- Courses from the Construction Management & Administration Certificate program are recognized for the Blue Seal Certificate through Alberta Advanced Education — Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
Gold Seal certificate
- Our courses are accredited by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) for Gold Seal certification. The Gold Seal Certificate is valued by the construction industry and offers an assurance that the professional has attained a nationally recognized level of competence.
Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS)e
- Select courses within this program are recognized by the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors toward the Professional Quantity Surveyor and Construction Estimator Certified designations.
Continuing Professional Development
- Courses from the Construction Management & Administration Certificate may qualify for your association’s professional development requirements. Please contact your association for information.
The Construction Management & Administration Certificate is comprised of five 39-hour core courses, one 21 hour core seminar, and a minimum of 39 hours in elective courses, for a total of 255 instructional hours. This part-time program is typically completed within one to three years, but students have up to six years to fulfill their program requirements.
Courses are face-to-face and web-enhanced. Some courses may have pre- or post-class assignments in addition to the scheduled face-to-face classroom work. Schedules are flexible and designed to accommodate the needs of those holding full-time jobs.
* EXCST 4201 Construction Estimating can also be completed fully online.
Once you are admitted, you can verify your program requirements by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view your Academic Advisement.
- An application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
- Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes.
- Courses are GST-exempt.
- Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.
- Eligible for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant.
