Every day the world becomes more con­nect­ed through tech­nol­o­gy, trade, human­i­tar­i­an work, and shared envi­ron­men­tal resources. Strong lead­er­ship is an increas­ing­ly need­ed asset, the kind of lead­er­ship that can gal­va­nize mem­bers from dif­fer­ent cul­tures to respond to a com­mon goal.

The Advanced Cita­tion in Glob­al Lead­er­ship from the Fac­ul­ty of Exten­sion, Uni­ver­si­ty of Alber­ta has been designed to empow­er lead­ers with the capac­i­ty for a glob­al mind­set and an abil­i­ty to lead in mul­ti­cul­tur­al set­tings. Learn­ers in this online pro­gram will focus on top­ics such as world views, polit­i­cal and cul­tur­al com­plex­i­ty, cross-cul­tur­al com­mu­ni­ca­tion, delib­er­a­tive dis­course, and tech­no­log­i­cal changes.

This advanced cita­tion will be of val­ue to indi­vid­u­als inter­est­ed in work­ing with­in a glob­al con­text and devel­op­ing lead­er­ship skills to draw cul­tures clos­er togeth­er. Learn­ers come from a vari­ety of indus­tries, vol­un­teer orga­ni­za­tions, gov­ern­ment sec­tor, and small to large enter­pris­es. Par­tic­i­pants must have pre­vi­ous­ly com­plet­ed at least one post-sec­ondary pro­gram (cer­tifi­cate, diplo­ma, or degree) from a rec­og­nized institution.

Develop an international mindset, as they become aware of the core intercultural competencies needed to effectively work within global organizations.

Build awareness of how one’s cultural perspective influences individual values, beliefs, and actions.

Recognize the cultural filters and customs that help shape communication.

Identify differences in leadership practices within various international organizations.

Learn to decode and bridge complex intercultural situations.

You can register for a course without applying and enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Advanced Citation.

Enrolling in the pro­gram is a require­ment if you want to earn the cita­tion. You may apply for admis­sion as you start your stud­ies or, if you pre­fer, after you have tak­en one or more courses. 

To enrol in this pro­gram, as well as to reg­is­ter for any of its cours­es, you must have pre­vi­ous­ly com­plet­ed at least one cre­den­tialed pro­gram (cer­tifi­cate, diplo­ma, or degree) from a rec­og­nized post-sec­ondary institution.

This part-time program is comprised of three core courses offered online. Each course is equivalent to 39 hours, for a total of 117 instructional hours. Most students choose to complete the citation requirements within one to two years.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the citation.

We highly recommend that courses are completed in the following order:

Leadership Practices
  • An appli­ca­tion fee of $100 is required for admis­sion into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you reg­is­ter for your classes.
  • Cours­es are GST-exempt.
  • Eli­gi­ble for the Cana­da-Alber­ta Job Grant.
