between Indigenous people, industry, and government

The University of Alberta and Yellowhead Tribal College (YTC) are pleased to announce a partnership to jointly deliver the Faculty of Extension’s Indigenous programs: Indigenous Community-Industry Relations certificate (ICIR) and Indigenous Community Engagement citation (ICE).
This agreement brings together the knowledge systems of both institutions, their expertise and wisdom in their respective teaching areas, and their desire to work together for the provision of continuing education.
A Step Ahead Toward Reconciliation
Since their launch in 2015, our Indigenous programs have been deeply connected to Indigenous peoples, who have contributed their expertise through course development, delivery, and content knowledge. But much has changed in these last five years.
As the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action brought about recognition of Indigenous peoples’ authority over their ancestral knowledge, the university became increasingly aware that there is a space for knowledge to be shared between our institution and First Nations colleges.
This new partnership between UAlberta and YTC represents a step ahead toward reconciliation and the recognition of First Nations sovereignty and knowledges.
What Co-Delivery Looks Like
Course registration – Beginning in the Fall 2020 term, all core and elective courses that encompass First Nations knowledge will be delivered through Yellowhead Tribal College. Registrations for Indigenous-content courses will be processed directly through YTC, while business electives will still be offered and managed by the Faculty of Extension.
Current citation students – As an ICE citation student admitted through the application process, you won’t see any major changes. Your primary relationship for the program is still going to be with the Faculty of Extension and, as always, we’ll be there for you for any administrative support you may need.
Although the requirements for the program — that is, the core courses and elective hours you’ll need to take to complete the citation — will remain unchanged, you will have a wider portfolio of electives to choose from, which will now include business courses.
One of the changes taking place is that registrations for your next Indigenous-content ICE courses will be processed directly by the college. You’ll be able to transfer all of your ICE courses between the two institutions (UAlberta and YTC), with no fees charged for transferring course credits.
New applicants – If you are a new student applying to ICE on or after October 21, 2020, you will be welcomed into your program by Yellowhead Tribal College (YTC), which will be your main point of contact for any administrative support you may need. If you haven’t applied to the program but have completed one or more Indigenous-content courses at Extension, you will be able to apply to the citation through the YTC. You’ll also be able to transfer all of your ICE courses between the two institutions with no fees charged.

A note about COVID-19 measures
If you see a program on our website announced as an in-person or downtown Edmonton offering, please disregard the format—but not the program. Winter, Spring, and Summer 2021 courses have been converted to remote delivery platforms. Register for a course online or apply to a program via email, and keep learning!
