Meet­ing the emerg­ing needs of Law Enforce­ment, the pro­gram pro­vides a com­pre­hen­sive man­age­ment devel­op­ment edu­ca­tion with a vari­ety of elec­tives to allow par­tic­i­pants to focus on areas of inter­est or need. Cours­es with­in this pro­gram cov­er lead­er­ship fun­da­men­tals, human resource man­age­ment, finan­cial man­age­ment, strate­gic deci­sion-mak­ing, and busi­ness com­mu­ni­ca­tion. Our grad­u­ates are well equipped for lead­er­ship posi­tions and can be relied upon for strong deci­sion-mak­ing and lead­er­ship skills with­in the police service.

Combines the latest management theories, tools, and techniques with the knowledge and skills you have gained through your police services career.

Introduces the principles of general management and the ways in which organizations function.

Illustrates how to use this knowledge to be more effective in your job and marketable in today’s workplace.

Helps develop skills required to analyze issues and make effective decisions.

You can register for a course without applying and enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate.

Enrolling in the pro­gram is a require­ment if you want to earn the cer­tifi­cate. You may apply for admis­sion as you start your stud­ies or, if you pre­fer, after you have tak­en one or more courses.

We are open to stu­dents with a vari­ety of edu­ca­tion­al and pro­fes­sion­al back­grounds. Our expec­ta­tion is that you have a com­mit­ment to learn and achieve your con­tin­u­ing edu­ca­tion goals.

This program is comprised of five core courses and 117 instructional hours of electives. Designed for part-time study, it can generally be completed within two to three years. Evening, weekend, and weekday learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules.

Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).

Once you are admitted, you can verify your program requirements by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view your Academic Advisement.

  • An appli­ca­tion fee of $100 is required for admis­sion into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you reg­is­ter for your classes.
  • Cours­es are GST-exempt.
  • Some cours­es require a text­book at an addi­tion­al cost.
  • Eli­gi­ble for the Cana­da-Alber­ta Job Grant.
