Award­ed by the Glob­al Risk Man­age­ment Insti­tute (GRMI), the Cana­di­an Risk Man­age­ment (CRM) des­ig­na­tion is a wide­ly rec­og­nized qual­i­fi­ca­tion that pro­vides risk man­agers a foun­da­tion of knowl­edge and skills need­ed to iden­ti­fy, assess, mon­i­tor, and lim­it risks.

Risk man­age­ment is the abil­i­ty to ana­lyze, com­mu­ni­cate, rec­om­mend prob­lem-solv­ing tech­niques, and mon­i­tor the expo­sure of unex­pect­ed losses.

The CRM pro­gram is offered at the Fac­ul­ty of Exten­sion in coop­er­a­tion with the Risk and Insur­ance Man­age­ment Soci­ety (RIMS). Cours­es are focused on the iden­ti­fi­ca­tion and assess­ment of expo­sures to loss, strate­gies for con­trol­ling iden­ti­fied loss­es, and a review of tech­niques for financ­ing the pay­ment of those loss­es which do occur.

The Risk and Insur­ance Man­age­ment pro­gram will be of ben­e­fit to risk man­agers, insur­ance pro­fes­sion­als, project man­agers, and indi­vid­u­als from a vari­ety of indus­tries who are inter­est­ed in earn­ing the CRM des­ig­na­tion. Par­tic­i­pants in this pro­gram come from areas such as oil and gas, insur­ance com­pa­nies, and small to large enter­pris­es in the pub­lic and pri­vate sectors.

There are no employ­ment or edu­ca­tion pre­req­ui­sites for this program. 

Stu­dents are not required to apply for admis­sion to the Uni­ver­si­ty of Alber­ta — only to reg­is­ter for each course on an indi­vid­ual basis. 

A post-course test admin­is­tered direct­ly by the Glob­al Risk Man­age­ment Insti­tute (GRMI) is a require­ment for obtain­ing the cre­den­tial: exam details and reg­is­tra­tion.

CRM Des­ig­na­tion details

This part-time program is comprised of three courses. Each course is 39 hours in length, for a total of 117 instructional hours. Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that bet fit their schedule.

Once you successfully complete your courses at the Faculty of Extension, a separate testing and credentialing process takes place directly with the Global Risk Management Institute (GRMI).

3 core courses (with accompanying course exams – not GRMI)

3 GRMI-administered exams (taken upon completion of each EXIIC course)

  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you reg­is­ter for your classes.
  • Cours­es are GST-exempt.
  • Some cours­es require a text­book at an addi­tion­al cost.
