Give your art prac­tice the ded­i­ca­tion it deserves by pur­su­ing the Cita­tion in Visu­al Arts Fun­da­men­tals, then con­tin­ue your stud­ies by apply­ing to the Visu­al Arts Cer­tifi­cate.

This new cita­tion pro­gram is ide­al for begin­ners and casu­al artists of all lev­els. Explore fun­da­men­tal con­cepts in tra­di­tion­al areas such as draw­ing, paint­ing, design, and his­to­ry. Designed so that learn­ers can con­tin­ue full-time employ­ment dur­ing their stud­ies, this pro­gram inte­grates class­room the­o­ry and prac­ti­cal stu­dio train­ing in a sup­port­ive envi­ron­ment, while also offer­ing oppor­tu­ni­ties for indi­vid­ual feed­back from pro­fes­sion­al artists.

Once you have com­plet­ed the Cita­tion in Visu­al Arts Fun­da­men­tals, you are eli­gi­ble to con­tin­ue your stud­ies by apply­ing to the Visu­al Arts Cer­tifi­cate. This cer­tifi­cate gives learn­ers the oppor­tu­ni­ty to fur­ther devel­op their skills by con­tin­u­ing to explore tra­di­tion­al art and design con­cepts and tech­niques and par­tic­i­pate in a grad­u­at­ing group exhibition.

You can reg­is­ter for a course with­out enrolling in the pro­gram, as long as course pre­req­ui­sites are met. If lat­er you decide to apply for the full pro­gram, the course(s) you’ve tak­en will be applied toward your citation.

To enrol in the Cita­tion in Visu­al Arts Fun­da­men­tals, you must have a high school diplo­ma (min­i­mum 100 cred­its) or equiv­a­lent. If you attend­ed a high school in Alber­ta, tran­scripts may be ordered from Alber­ta Edu­ca­tion at 7804275732; if you attend­ed high school out­side of Alber­ta, con­tact the provin­cial depart­ment of education. 

You are still invit­ed to apply if you do not meet the admis­sion require­ments. Your qual­i­fi­ca­tions will be reviewed, and con­di­tion­al entrance may be grant­ed. For details, please con­tact the pro­gram office at 7804923034.

The Visu­al Arts Cer­tifi­cate is open to stu­dents who have com­plet­ed the Cita­tion in Visu­al Arts Fun­da­men­tals.

Typical course load is one course per term, three terms a year. This pace can be accelerated by attending two courses per term.

Coursework includes exercises, assignments, and in most cases, a final project.


Complete the four foundation courses plus one elective.


Once you've earned your Citation in Visual Arts Fundamentals, complete three core courses plus two electives. The program culminates with students participating in a group graduating exhibition at the Extension Gallery.


EXGEN 3009 is an optional post-certificate mentorship is a course designed to give Visual Arts Certificate graduates the opportunity to work one on one with a mentor towards a solo exhibition at the Extension Gallery.

Once you are admitted, you can verify your program requirements by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view your Academic Advisement.

  • An appli­ca­tion fee of $100 is required for admis­sion into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you reg­is­ter for your classes.
  • Cours­es are GST-exempt.
  • Eli­gi­ble for the Cana­da-Alber­ta Job Grant.
  • Cor­po­rate mul­ti-reg­is­tra­tion pack­ages are avail­able for most Exten­sion cours­es. Con­tact us at excorp@​ualberta.​ca for pre­ferred pricing.
  • Unless specified in the course description, art supplies and textbooks are not included in course fees. Costs range from $100 to $150 for introductory courses and up to $200 for advanced courses.
