This cer­tifi­cate cov­ers top­ics relat­ed to the sol­id and liq­uid phas­es of soils, reac­tive chem­i­cal con­stituents, fer­til­i­ty and plant growth, as well as soil for­ma­tion, eval­u­a­tion, sus­tain­abil­i­ty, and man­age­ment. The cours­es offer hands-on appli­ca­tions with real-world sit­u­a­tions and respon­sive edu­ca­tion. Stu­dents will enhance their pro­fes­sion­al skill set and knowl­edge based on cur­rent research, reg­u­la­tions, and applications.

Soil sci­ence appli­ca­tions are inte­gral with­in numer­ous aspects of eco­nom­ic, agri­cul­tur­al, envi­ron­men­tal, com­mer­cial, recre­ation­al, and inno­v­a­tive advancements.

Prac­ti­tion­ers work­ing with soil as mon­i­tors, audi­tors, tech­nol­o­gists, engi­neers, agrol­o­gists, biol­o­gists, foresters, con­sul­tants, and reg­u­la­tors will ben­e­fit from this pro­gram. These cours­es are rec­og­nized by the Alber­ta Insti­tute of Agrol­o­gists as senior-lev­el agrol­o­gy cours­es relat­ed to entrance into the pro­fes­sion and to aug­ment core knowl­edge require­ments relat­ed to a prac­tice area in AIA.

You can register for a course without applying and enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate.

Cours­es may be com­plet­ed indi­vid­u­al­ly or as part of the cer­tifi­cate. There are no pre­req­ui­sites to take the cours­es; pri­or knowl­edge of con­tent area, how­ev­er, is expect­ed for stu­dent suc­cess. Stu­dents are expect­ed to pos­sess entry-lev­el knowl­edge of the sub­ject mat­ter through job train­ing, pre­vi­ous edu­ca­tion, or work expe­ri­ence in a com­ple­men­tary envi­ron­men­tal sector.

Select cours­es count for cred­it with­in the Envi­ron­men­tal Reme­di­a­tion cer­tifi­cate, Land Recla­ma­tion cer­tifi­cate, and Water Resource Man­age­ment certificate.

Four courses are needed to graduate. Courses are comprised of 39 instructional hours each, and are scheduled over daytime, evening, and weekend classes. Once the program has been completed, an official University of Alberta parchment will be issued.

  • An appli­ca­tion fee of $100 is required for admis­sion into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you reg­is­ter for your classes.
  • Cours­es are GST-exempt.
  • Eli­gi­ble for the Cana­da-Alber­ta Job Grant.
